Awareness Poster - Roundup

As promised, I have created an awareness poster that pertains to the recent studies that show Roundup contributes to the cause of cancer. In my poster, I have a bottle of Roundup being sprayed. I brought in the dandelions from another image to show their various stages of their life and death, and I added cancer cell images to show that when you are spraying this chemical, you are actually spraying cancer. The idea behind dandelions on one side and cancer cells on the other is to elude to the transition, or trade off, that you can have dandelions, or cancer. I used the phrase Roundup: Killing weeds since 1974 and changed weeds to people. I used the font that was similar to the Roundup font on the bottle to relate to the brand, and chose a blood red type strike through on "weeds" to grab the attention of the viewer.

Awareness Poster - Part I

For this assignment, Awareness Poster, I have chosen to focus on the health issues related to the usage of the Roundup Weed Killer products. Recent research confirms a correlation between the usage of these chemicals and various types of cancers. There are hundreds of lawsuits making their way into the court system. I think there needs to be a heavier awareness around the usage of these products and the potential (and confirmed) serious harm that they can cause. I am still fleshing out all the details but will be creating a poster that clearly depicts the product in question, and the resulting circumstances, a cancer diagnosis leading to death. I am going to try to merge a couple of different pictures together that gives the message “Roundup, killing weeds since 1974” and then I will cross through “weeds” and change it to “people”. I will use a font that looks like a horror movie to make the point clear. The images I have for use are below.

Photomontage: Image Hijack Part 2

For this Photomontage assignment, I chose the issue of the rising costs in medical care. I took the advice of my classmate, and chose Martin Shkreli for my well-known image, the focus of the project. The rising costs of medical continue to have a great effect on the American economy. There have been many high-profile situations over the last couple of decades regarding the deep pockets of insurance company executives and pharmaceutical companies. Martin Shkreli was most known for cavalierly hiking the price of an HIV drug, and then subsequently being convicted of securities fraud in 2017. Shkreli represents the greed that pharmaceutical companies oftentimes are guilty of, and later lost all of his assets due to his conviction. The image that was created is a well-known photo of Martin Shkreli, that was modified to close his eyes and make him appear to be dead. Meanwhile, he rests his head upon a pillow of 100 dollar bills, that served no purpose as you can’t take your money with you when you die, and he is surrounded by medical bills that are to elude to the cause of his death.

Important political issue 1

Homelessness

1)    It goes without saying that homelessness is a real issue in the United States. It is sad and frustrating to see how many homeless individuals there are while others live in extremely lavish houses and overindulge on absolutely everything. My idea for a photomontage would be a well-known mansion with a tent city superimposed near it, as if the homeless people are living just outside their gate. I have image options for Trump’s Mir-A-Lago mansion in FL and some tent city images and individual homeless people that I would like to work in somehow.

Health Care Costs

2)    Another current political issue in the US is the ever-increasing rise in health care costs. While the cost of health care is rising, more and more people are becoming uninsured, even after the enactment of the Affordable Care Act. For this image, I am thinking about using an image of an insurance company or medical bill of some kind that has literally killed someone. There has to be some kind of notion of the cost of healthcare so the concept I am thinking of is an image of a person who got an insurance or medical bill that then experiences cardiac arrest or something to that affect, with their bill lying in their hands.

Social Security

3)    An issue in the US is social security and whether or not the age to collect social security should be raised. My thought on this image would be that of someone celebrating a retirement party but the person is clearly a lot older than anyone who should still be working. A candidate for the picture would be the woman from Japan who had celebrated her 116^th birthday.
